Eclectic yarn: stories in stitches and threads

Welcome! I’m Bronwyn, and I’ve knitted and stitched for so long I can’t remember being taught. My “serious” stitching began with cushions to go with a new sofa…. you can read about it here. Although I’d worked cross stitch as a child and young adult, designing my own patterns was more attractive than using a kitset or others’ patterns.
In 2020 I began my “Silver Birch Forest” series; this has evolved in a couple of different directions. Some pieces are inspired by exhibition themes or evolve organically from the yarns and fabric in my stash.
Since joining Creative Fibre in 2018, my imagination and experimentation have increased, along with my confidence, and I’m having a go at couching and embellishing as well as long stitch, cross stitch and embroidery stitches.
Ranges
While my artworks often begin as spontaneous stitching, I do plan ahead a little for some works; these have developed into several distinct ranges, as I create similar versions of favourite themes, e.g. to date I’ve stitched around thirty “Silver Birch Forest” works, half a dozen “Luscious Lavenders”, a number of floral and stylised flower pieces and an increasing number of other Tree or Forest themed artworks.
Commissions
I’d be glad to accept commissions from anyone who’s happy with my process-led, and largely unplanned, non-representational style of creating – see the story of a major commission here.
Workshops
Following the success of a recent workshop for Wellington Embroiderers’ Guild, I’d be happy to offer this or a similar workshop to other groups – see details here.
