In September 2024, I designed and lead a workshop on Stitching a surprise! Creating pattern-free, process-led fibre artworks for Wellington Embroiderers’ Guild. I’d be happy to facilitate similar workshops for interested groups or individuals.

Do you sometimes think, “I wish I could do that”, when you see a fibre artwork that’s clearly not from a pattern, or colourful abstract stitching that suggests a theme or landscape rather than recreating it?

If you’re great at following directions and creating stitched perfection, here’s your chance to relax the rules and let yarns and colours inspire you. If you struggle to count stitches or if charts confuse you, you’ll enjoy creating from your imagination.

Stitching a Surprise offers the chance to be free of expectations and enjoy the adventure of stitching something individual and uniquely yours.

Stitching on fabric – a new technique

Stitching on fabric rather than tapestry canvas is a whole new experience for me, and I’m enjoying the speed at which I can complete a work: hours rather than weeks!

Here’s my most recent stitching work, which I’m pretty pleased with as it’s different from anything I’ve done before. Although working cross stitch and long stitch on tapestry canvas will probably remain my favourite way of making fibre art, it’s good to have new tools in my skill set.
